Okay I got busy today so this one is gong to be short and sweet.
So I think we’re all aware that legacy queer publications like Out and The Advocate have basically become barely-better-than-clickbait blogs with a publication philosophy roughly along the lines of “if it’s queer, it appears!” Did an LGBTQ person let out a fart in public? Well you better believe The Advocate is going to write about it! The gaping maw of the internet demand ever an increasing amount of content, and if you happen to stop for one second to ask yourself, “Is this actually, uh, LGBTQ news?”, well, woe betide to you.
That is, honestly, the only explanation I can come up with for The Advocate running this story, at least:
Because truly: what the fuck.
I know that Andrew Gillum* had his fair share of troubles. I know that it was during a low point in his life that he came out as bi. Does every bisexual’s personal and legal woes necessitate coverage in The Advocate? Do we really need “bisexual ex-Florida mayor” to be the headline here?
It honestly makes me want to go back to the earliest issues of The Advocate, to see if, perhaps, there was an issue from 1970 containing the headline: “Gay Japanese Fascist Dies By Seppuku**.” Because if not, I mean — perhaps we can leave the bisexuals out of this.
Please.
* Whose last name, I should note, my computer keeps “correcting” to Gollum
** Google Yukio Mishima
I was assigned “The Sound of Waves” sophomore year of HS (so ... 1998, yikes). It was *wild* to learn the author’s bio.
I have to say, I'm a sucker for a Yukio Mishima reference.
Also, putting "bi" or "gay" or "lesbian" or "dominatrix" or "christian" or before someone's name is almost always a sideways dig or clickbait because it usually has no bearing whatsoever on the story.
